What to Expect When Dropping Off Your Truck for XPEL PPF

Dropping off your truck for XPEL PPF and a chrome delete is where the real quality begins — long before the film is ever installed.

Chrome Delete Drop Off Process

Getting paint protection film (PPF) and a chrome delete installed isn’t just a quick “leave it and pick it up later” service. The prep work and drop-off process play a huge role in how clean, precise, and long-lasting the final result will be.

If you’re bringing in a new truck, here’s exactly what to expect — and why each step matters.

First Impressions: The Walkthrough

When you arrive, the process starts with a full walkthrough of your truck. Even brand-new vehicles aren’t perfect. During this inspection, your installer will look for:

  • Light scratches or swirl marks from the dealership
  • Shipping film residue or adhesive
  • Small chips or imperfections
  • Areas that need extra attention before film goes on

This step sets expectations and ensures nothing gets trapped under the film later.

Confirming Paint Protection Film Coverage and Chrome Delete Details

Before any work begins, you’ll confirm exactly what’s being protected and transformed. For PPF, this might include:

  • Full front (hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors)
  • High-impact areas (rocker panels, door edges)
  • Full-body wrap for maximum protection

For additional protection, XPEL Ceramic Coating can be applied over the PPF. This helps enhance the shine of the paint and makes cleaning the vehicle easier.

For the chrome delete, you’ll also go over:

  • Which trim pieces are being blacked out (grille, window trim, badges, etc.)
  • Finish options (gloss black, satin, matte)
  • Any custom touches to match the truck’s overall look
  • Any pieces you may have brought for Benchmark’s team to install.

This is where the project becomes tailored to your goals, rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

Signing for Your Loaner Car

If you have arranged for a loaner vehicle, you’ll need to bring:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proof of insurance

Once your license and insurance has been confirmed, you’ll sign a simple document taking responsibility for the vehicle while it’s in your possession and acknowledge that you will return the car with a full tank. The process is pretty much like renting a car, just a lot quicker.

The Pre-Clean: More Than a Car Wash

Before film touches the surface, your truck goes through a deep cleaning process. This includes:

  • Foam wash to remove surface dirt
  • Chemical decontamination to break down embedded contaminants
  • Clay bar treatment to smooth the paint

The goal is simple: create a perfectly clean surface so the film adheres properly without imperfections underneath. And, all of this happens within Benchmark’s clean and sterile shop.

Paint Correction (If Needed)

If your truck has swirl marks or minor defects, a light paint correction may be recommended. Why this matters:

  • PPF locks in whatever is underneath it
  • Scratches and swirls don’t “disappear” once film is installed
  • A quick polish can dramatically improve the final look

Even new trucks often benefit from this step.

Final Prep Before Installation

Right before installation, the surface is wiped down again using a specialized solution to remove any remaining oils or residue. At this stage:

  • The environment is controlled (dust-free as possible)
  • Panels are prepped section by section
  • Everything is checked one last time

Only then does the actual installation begin.

Why Checking and a Sterile Environment is Essential

Skipping or rushing prep is the fastest way to get a poor result. A proper drop-off and prep process ensures:

  • Better adhesion of the film and vinyl
  • Fewer visible imperfections
  • Cleaner edges and tighter finishes
  • Longer-lasting protection and appearance

In short, the quality of the prep directly determines the quality of the final product.

The Result: Protection + Transformation

When done right, your truck leaves with:

  • Nearly invisible protection from rock chips and road debris
  • A dramatically upgraded look with blacked-out trim
  • A finish that looks intentional—not aftermarket

And it all starts with what happens the moment you drop off the keys.

Chrome Delete + PPF Film + Ceramic Coating

This is the second post in this series following a full chrome delete on a GMC Sierra 2500 Denali Ultimate. As we continue, we’ll look next at what’s involved with the PPF Film install, the pick up process, the ease of washing, and how the truck’s paint holds up.

If you missed the first in this series, you can read about the quote process here. If you're ready to schedule your own PPF and Ceramic Coating, schedule a consultation.
